Hi everyone! What a week it’s been… In case some of you don’t know, I work for a TV show as my “day job.” Yes, that’s right, I don’t just blog full-time! These last few weeks at work have been some of the most stressful I’ve ever had. To make matters worse, all that stress is on top of the book launch, collaboration deals and freelance work. Basically, my brain is really about to explode!
As for my book, Renting Revamped, it’s finally finished but in the process of distribution right now. Who knows how long that will take… Eventually, I will need to do a vlog or a blog post on the journey because it has definitely been one hell of a ride. I’m just so anxious and ready to release it!
Anyways, let’s get to why you’re here. I will discuss renter myths in Renting Revamped, but this one was too important not to share on the blog. Whenever I work with clients, their first question to me (once I deliver their style guide) is, “How am I supposed to hang that if I can’t use nails?”
Okay guys, I don’t know where or how this myth started about not being able to use nails in a rented space. Maybe it started from not being able to nail in dorm rooms? Anyways, this is a complete myth as 95% of the time, you CAN nail into walls as long as you fill in the holes with spackle upon moving out. Think about it: In most places, landlords are required to repaint between tenants. Even if the landlord isn’t required to repaint, all you need to do is ask your landlord what paint they used and paint over the spackle job yourself.
*Always remember that after filling in the nail hole with spackle, you need to let it dry and then use sandpaper to smooth it out. You can go ahead and paint after sanding.

Chelsey, this must be a universal rule for Renters because in Australia it’s exactly the same. Only we don’t have ‘spackle’ we have ‘Selleys Spakfilla’.
I’ve must have repaired over 100 nail, pin & tack holes in my entire rented life.
There is absolutely NO way I am NOT going to put up artwork, photos etc in my rental property.
I am SO sorry I am just responding! I don’t know how I just saw this! I feel the same way about it.. There’s NO way I am NOT going to hang my artwork! Where do you live in Australia? I studied abroad in the Gold Coast!
